May Basket 8x8 Tile in Cream

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959) is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest architects of the 20th century.

In 1927, Wright designed a series of 12 monthly covers for Liberty magazine based on seasonal themes. Unfortunately, the publishers judged them as too radical for the time. The magazine returned Wright’s presentation drawings, which became the basis for later interpretations executed in diverse media. Each cover design exemplifies Wright’s practice of using the tools of his trade —T-square, triangle and compass — to create lively geometric designs.

Nearly a century later, Motawi celebrates this study in geometry, asymmetry and color with its 8x8 ceramic art tile rendering of Wright’s May Basket design, which features the abstraction of a basket overflowing with grapes and other fruit in springtime.

Motawi polychrome tiles are striking individual art pieces as much as functional tile installation accents.
